In health care, keeping your skills current is central to protecting patients. For nurses in Texas, that means meeting the Board's continuing-competency standard at each renewal; for nursing assistants, it means holding a valid CPR certificate as a condition of training and of the job. Here is what the rules expect for your role — and how recognized, up-to-date, documented training meets it.

Registered and licensed vocational nurses in Texas renew their licence through the Texas Board of Nursing, which sets a continuing-competency standard designed to keep clinical knowledge and skills current. The activities you complete must be relevant to your area of nursing practice — you choose those that fit your role.

Under the Texas Nursing Practice Act, a nurse is accountable for maintaining competence and for responding appropriately in a clinical emergency. Being able to initiate resuscitation and basic life-saving measures is part of the standard of safe, competent care the Board expects.

These professions are subject to a mandatory continuing-competency standard: the Board requires 20 contact hours of continuing education per 2-year cycle, or maintaining an approved national certification in the nurse's area of practice. Advanced accredited courses such as ACLS or PALS can count toward the 20 hours, while basic life support otherwise remains an employer requirement.

Texas goes further for support staff. To enter a nurse aide training program (NATCEP, 100 hours), a candidate must provide proof of CPR training at the healthcare-provider level — a standalone credential, distinct from the training diploma, that must be obtained and then kept current. A recognized certificate meets that requirement for Certified Nurse Aides working in assisted living, long-term care and home health aide roles.
